“My Dear Is a Hero Now” is an enlivening wartime lyric song depicting the devoted efforts of the Korean people who fought heroically on the front and in the rear, motivated by the radio address titled, Go All Out for Victory in the War , the great leader Comrade Kim Il Sung delivered the following day when the Fatherland Liberation War (June 25, 1950-July 27, 1953) broke out. Created in 1951, it was written by Pak Sam Gyu and set to music by Jong Jin Ok.
The work is about the life of a woman in the rear who works hard for the wartime grain production, inspired by the news that her husband became a hero after performing great feats in the fight against the US imperialist aggressors. It gives a lifelike and optimistic description of the active struggle of the people in the rear for victory in the war and the ennobling traits of the beautiful, simple yet staunch Korean women.
The song runs in part: I haven’t heard from my husband for so long. One day a soldier stopped by my home with some news about him that he had become a hero for killing a hundred US soldiers and defending the height. Feeling shameful to meet him as I have done nothing special in the rear, I will set an example in wartime grain production and assistance to the People’s Army. The song makes the singers feel joyous and emotional for its lively and sweet melody, jaunty rhythm and contrasting tone.
Chairman Kim Jong Il (February 16, 1942-December 17, 2011) watched a musical tale based on the song given by the Kangwon provincial art troupe on August 25, 2009. He praised the art troupe for producing the characteristic artistic work of great cognitive and educational significance and took a measure to invite the troupe to the capital city of Pyongyang to perform there.
In August last year the art troupe re-presented the work produced 15 years ago and put it on the stage. The work vividly portrays the patriotic devotion of the women in the Kumgang village who distinguished themselves in providing active assistance to the front during the Fatherland Liberation War. The performance was greeted with loud applause as it gives the truth that nothing can check the strength of the army and people united as one around their leader.
As it vividly represents the army-people unity and the optimistic life of the women in the rear during the war, the hit song is still fondly sung by the Korean people.
