The National Aerospace Technology Administration was established on April 1, 2013, in accordance with the space policy of the Workers’ Party of Korea and the DPRK government. Since then, it has spearheaded the country’s drive to explore the outer space.
Over the past ten or so years, it has placed artificial satellites on a multi-functional and high-performance basis and addressed lots of technical problems concerning the control and operation of satellites in an original way, thus making good progress in the efforts to introduce the application technology into national defence and economic construction.
The successful launch of the reconnaissance satellite Malligyong-1 in 2023 was geared to attaining the immediate and long-term goals of the WPK’s space policy. The development and operation of reconnaissance satellites is part of the DPRK’s measures for bolstering up its self-defensive military capabilities in order to defend its rights to existence and development and peace and security in the region.
A series of achievements have been made in core space technology research projects.
At present, the DPRK government aims to give precedence to advanced and valuable projects and steadily build on the successes to be achieved in this course.
Efforts are also made to develop a variety of satellites for communications, meteorological observation and prospecting so as to promote economic growth and public welfare.
It is a consistent stand of the DPRK to foster international cooperation in the space field on the principle of respect for sovereignty, non-interference in others’ internal affairs, equality and mutual benefit.
Every time it launches a satellite, the DPRK issues an early warning to ensure security of aircraft, pursuant to the rules of the International Civil Aviation Organization, and it also observes the regulations of the International Maritime Organization and the International Hydrography Organization to ensure the safe journey of vessels.
The DPRK channels sustainable efforts into its independent space programme, given that the growth of space industry is a key to opening a shortcut to acquiring the status of a global economic, scientific and technological power and it represents the overall national strength.
