In March I happened to hear some people laughing with joy as I went by the township of Poptong County, a mountainous county in Kangwon Province.
Out of curiosity, I made my way towards the place where I found a group of locals leaving a shop with various processed marine products.
A shop attendant told me that she was selling processed marine products from a fish processing factory of the Chonapho Fishery Research Institute to the locals, adding that they received hearty feedback from the customers as they had sold seafood to them several times this year alone.
Then she continued.
In July 11 years ago, the respected Comrade Kim Jong Un visited the Chonapho Fishery Research Institute situated on the shore of the East Sea of Korea. There he said that the Workers’ Party of Korea decided to turn the institute into a modern scientific research and dissemination base and a core and pivotal base of fish farming and processing for the people’s benefit, calling for achieving successes in its research work and normalizing the production on a high level.
A housewife said with satisfaction that the products from the institute’s fish processing factory won the top prize at the national exhibition of processed marine products held last year and that her family members like so much the dishes made with Chonapho-brand processed marine products.
The factory supplies its products not only to Poptong County but also other cities and counties in Kangwon Province.
Soon after, a convoy carrying processed marine products was seen whistling into the township.
I was deeply impressed by the mountainous village overflowing with sea fragrance.
