Ri Myong Ryong, a researcher at the faculty of life science of University of Sciences, is one of the luminaries of biophysics.

Ri desired to become a scientist from his childhood, following in the footsteps of his parents who majored in chemistry and medicine. He graduated from the then faculty of biology at University of Sciences in 1984. Since then, he has taught at his alma mater, making remarkable achievements in research and educational work.

“He is name-checked as one of the authorities on biochemistry, molecular biology and genetic engineering, as well as biophysics, his major. He once led the country’s biophysics research for years,” said Pak Song Jin, PhD, from the same university.

Ri Myong Ryong, professor and PhD, has successfully carried out dozens of research projects of national significance and contributed to the development of the national economy, which has earned him certificates of national patents and state registration and introduction of sci-tech hits.

He is credited with pioneering major subjects of the faculty of life science, such as biophysics, genome biology and biostatistics, and he has compiled scores of textbooks and reference books including “Molecular Biology of Genome” and “Nano Biomaterial Technology.”

“Bioinformatics Based on Matlab” is one of the favourite textbooks for postgraduates.

Ri in the textbook explained how to use matlab functions in the bioinformatical analysis and development of applications, providing a solution to sci-tech problems arising in promoting public health and improving the people’s living standards.

His papers such as “Construction of the compressed gene database and comparative genomics of some strains in Chlamydia,” “Study on fish genomic breeding” have been contributed to domestic and foreign journals.

In the early 2000s he was instrumental in the research and introduction of a potato virus verification method to a farm in Taehongdan County, a northern alpine area of the country, and threw himself into other research projects of actual significance.

Such successes enable him to teach both theoretical and practical knowledge in lectures.

Ri has trained tens of holders of academic degrees and titles, who are playing their part in developing the country’s science and technology.

Among his disciples is Han Kun Sop, PhD, from the same university who was highly appreciated in 2018 at the Critical Assessment of Techniques for Protein Structure Prediction, an international competition in the field of life science.

Ri Myong Ryong is working on a project for studying the genome sequencing technique and updating contents of biophysical education.
