The Industrial Crops Institute of the Academy of Agricultural Science, established in December 1984, specializes in research into crops rich in oil, sugar, fibre and other useful substances that serve as essential raw materials for regional-industry factories, especially foodstuffs factories.
Over the years the institute has developed new oil-bearing crops and registered dozens of good species in ten or so kinds like rape and flax as national species by giving precedence to the projects on cultivating good species, and made lots of achievements in the general processing of new crops and development of natural edible pigments and plant-activating fertilizers, said Paek Sol Hui, head of the institute who is honoured with the Order of Kim Il Sung and the title of Labour Hero, associate academician, professor and PhD.
In recent years it bred promising rape crops such as kaulyuchae Nos. 1 and 2 and established a system of breeding a sunflower of the first filial generation for the first time in the DPRK and developed a hybrid sunflower species with a very high content of oil and a high per-hectare yield, which has been put on the national crops list.
Researchers completed a project for developing a biopesticide by using a physiological activator that comes out of the processing of cotton, making it possible to apply it to the cultivation of vegetables, cotton and fruits.
In addition, they successfully worked on a project to develop an efficient plant-activating fertilizer and introduced it to hundreds of thousands of hectares of field across the country. Last year they made sure that it could be used to stimulate the growth of crops in the flood-stricken areas.
Currently, the institute is engaged in new projects for developing good species with a high per-hectare yield and strong resistance to adversities, and it is making dynamic efforts to breed and introduce more superior species as early as possible which are suited to the local climatic conditions and capable of producing a high and stable yield.
Additional efforts are being made to apply bioengineering technology and other achievements of advanced science and technology to breeding practice.
